A woodblock print from the catalogue of works by the Rinpa master Sakai Hōitsu, compiled by his student Ikeda Koson.
This woodblock print originates from the publication 'Mirror of Genuine Work of Monk Hōitsu' (Hōitsu shōnin shinseki kagami), compiled by Ikeda Koson. Koson was a prominent pupil of Sakai Hōitsu, the master of the Edo Rinpa school. This work serves as a catalogue of authentic paintings by his teacher, documenting the aesthetic principles and brushwork techniques that defined the Rinpa tradition during the nineteenth century.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels. On the left, a figure of a monk is rendered with minimal, expressive lines, capturing a sense of meditative stillness. The right panel features a bird perched upon a branch, accompanied by calligraphic text. This juxtaposition of human portraiture and natural observation is characteristic of the period, where artists sought to balance spiritual themes with the study of the physical world. The use of negative space and the economy of line demonstrate the technical precision required in woodblock printing to replicate the fluidity of ink wash paintings.
Ikeda Koson played a role in preserving the stylistic lineage of the Rinpa school. By documenting these works, he ensured that the methods of his predecessor remained accessible to contemporary students and collectors. The print reflects the refined sensibilities of the Edo literati, who valued the interplay between image and text. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the quality of the line and the balance of the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the scholarly practices of Japanese art history, where the act of copying and cataloguing was a form of homage to previous masters. The print remains a record of the artistic dialogue between a teacher and his dedicated follower, capturing the essence of the Rinpa aesthetic in a portable, printed format.
