This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Mitsuke, the twenty-ninth stop on the Tokaido road. It belongs to the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido due to the portrait orientation of the sheets. Hiroshige produced this series in 1855, late in his career, to offer a fresh perspective on the route he had previously documented in his horizontal series from the 1830s.

The composition centres on the wide, tranquil expanse of the Tenryu River. In the foreground, travellers gather near a small thatched structure, likely a rest stop or ferry terminal. Figures carry goods and navigate the path, while others are seen boarding small boats to cross the water. The middle ground shows the river winding through the terrain, with several boats mid-transit. In the distance, the soft, blue-toned silhouettes of mountains rise against the horizon, providing a sense of scale and atmospheric depth.

Hiroshige employs a refined colour palette, dominated by cool blues and muted greens. The sky features a subtle bokashi, or colour gradation, which transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a lighter hue near the mountains. The print captures the daily rhythm of travel along the Tokaido, focusing on the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. The inclusion of pine trees frames the scene, adding vertical elements that balance the horizontal flow of the river. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to organise complex spatial relationships within the constraints of the woodblock medium, providing a view of the Japanese countryside during the Edo period.
