Description

A 1903 etching by Swedish artist Anders Zorn, depicting Mme. Granberg through fluid, expressive lines and masterful tonal control.

Anders Zorn, a Swedish master of the etching medium, produced this portrait of Mme. Granberg in 1903. Zorn gained international recognition for his ability to capture the essence of a subject through minimal, decisive marks. His approach to printmaking involved a unique method of layering lines to create form and shadow, rather than relying on traditional cross-hatching techniques.

In this portrait, the subject is rendered with a focus on the play of light across her features. The lines are directional, following the contours of the face and the texture of her clothing. By varying the density and length of these strokes, Zorn achieves a sense of volume and depth that is remarkable for a monochromatic work. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the character and expression of the sitter. The use of a warm, toned paper provides a mid-tone that interacts with the dark ink, creating a balanced tonal range.

Zorn was a prolific etcher, and his works are collected for their technical virtuosity and their ability to convey a sense of immediacy. This piece displays his characteristic economy of line, where every mark serves a purpose in defining the form. The portrait captures a specific moment of quiet observation, typical of Zorn's approach to his subjects. It is a fine example of his mature style, where he moved away from rigid academic precision towards a more fluid, expressive manner of mark-making. The composition is intimate, drawing the viewer into a direct engagement with the subject. This print offers a clear view into the technical skill of one of the most accomplished printmakers of the early twentieth century.

Artist Biography

Anders Zorn

Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.

He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.

He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
