A 1969 Pop Art work by Roy Lichtenstein, featuring geometric forms and Ben-Day dots arranged in a systematic, modular grid.
Modular Painting with Four Panels, #1 is a work from Roy Lichtenstein's series of modular paintings produced in 1969. This series explored the concept of the grid and the potential for infinite expansion. Each panel functions as a discrete unit, yet the composition relies on the repetition of geometric forms to create a unified whole. The work features Lichtenstein's signature use of Ben-Day dots, a technique borrowed from commercial printing processes, which he employed to challenge traditional notions of painterly gesture and fine art authenticity.
The visual language of the piece is defined by bold, black outlines and a restricted palette of yellow, blue, black, and white. The diagonal lines and circular segments create a sense of mechanical precision. By using these industrial-looking motifs, Lichtenstein removes the evidence of the artist's hand, favouring a clean, impersonal aesthetic. The arrangement of the four panels suggests a system that could be rearranged or extended, reflecting the artist's interest in the relationship between mass production and high art.
Lichtenstein's approach to this series was systematic. He utilised a limited set of shapes, rotating and mirroring them across the canvas to generate complex patterns from simple components. This method aligns with the broader Pop Art movement's engagement with consumer culture and the aesthetics of the machine age. The work does not aim for emotional expression, but rather focuses on the formal properties of line, colour, and spatial organisation. It is a study in order and repetition, demonstrating how basic geometric elements can be manipulated to produce a sophisticated visual rhythm. The result is a work that feels both contemporary and rooted in the history of modernist abstraction, stripped of narrative content and focused entirely on its own structural logic.
