This graphite drawing by Cornelis Pronk captures the fortifications of Gorinchem, a Dutch city known for its strategic position. Pronk, a draughtsman active during the early 18th century, specialised in topographical studies of cities, castles, and country houses across the Netherlands. His work provides a record of the Dutch built environment before the industrial changes of later centuries.
The composition is sparse, focusing on the silhouette of the windmills positioned atop the city walls. The lines are thin and precise, characteristic of a preparatory sketch intended for later refinement or as a personal record of his travels. To the right, the spire of a church rises above the low-lying rooftops, providing a sense of scale and geographic context.
