A Zen-inspired triptych by Unkoku Tōeki, featuring the monk Zhaozhou and his dog, flanked by studies of a mynah bird and geese.
This triptych by Unkoku Tōeki presents a narrative scene rooted in Zen Buddhist tradition. The central panel depicts the Chinese monk Zhaozhou Congshen, a figure known for his paradoxical koans. He sits in contemplation before a small dog, a reference to the famous 'Mu' koan where Zhaozhou responds to a question about whether a dog has Buddha-nature. The flanking panels provide a naturalistic counterpoint, featuring a mynah bird perched on a gnarled branch and a pair of geese near reeds.
Unkoku Tōeki, the son of Unkoku Tōgan, worked within the Unkoku school, which drew heavy inspiration from the ink-wash techniques of Sesshū Tōyō. The composition relies on the economy of the brush, using varying densities of ink to define form and texture. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the negative space of the paper to suggest atmosphere and distance. The figures are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines, while the birds and foliage demonstrate a keen observation of natural movement.
This work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the simplicity of ink painting aligned with the meditative practices of the samurai and monastic classes. The triptych format creates a rhythmic visual experience, moving from the solitary human figure to the quiet presence of animals in their environment. The balance between the philosophical subject and the observational studies of birds creates a cohesive whole, typical of the scholarly approach to painting in seventeenth-century Japan. The brushwork remains precise, capturing the essence of the subjects without unnecessary ornamentation. This print captures the subtle tonal gradations of the original ink wash, preserving the meditative quality of the composition for a modern interior.
