A study of two monkeys perched on a rock, rendered in ink and colour on silk by the Edo period master Nagasawa Rosetsu.

Nagasawa Rosetsu, a pupil of Maruyama Okyo, is recognised for his unconventional approach to traditional Japanese painting. This work displays his mastery of ink wash techniques, combined with a keen observation of animal behaviour. The composition centres on two monkeys perched upon a craggy rock formation, overlooking a stream. Rosetsu employs a mix of soft, blurred ink washes to define the fur of the primates, contrasting this with the sharper, more deliberate lines used for the surrounding foliage.

The use of colour is restrained, with muted tones of grey and brown dominating the figures and the rock. This is punctuated by the application of red pigment on the leaves, which draws the eye across the lower portion of the frame. The negative space, characteristic of the period, allows the subjects to occupy the visual field without the need for a dense background. The monkeys are rendered with a degree of anthropomorphism, their expressions conveying a sense of curiosity or alertness that is typical of Rosetsu's more playful works.

As a member of the Maruyama school, Rosetsu was trained in the rigorous study of nature, yet he frequently departed from the strict realism of his teacher. His brushwork is fluid and expressive, showing a confidence that allows for both detail and abstraction within the same piece. The vertical orientation of the silk scroll dictates the flow of the composition, leading the viewer from the rushing water at the base up to the monkeys at the summit. This print captures the balance between technical precision and the spontaneous energy that defines the artist's output during the late eighteenth century.
