A traditional Japanese ink wash painting by Kano Tanshin, depicting a group of monkeys near a waterfall.
This hanging scroll, attributed to Kano Tanshin (Morimasa), displays the technical precision associated with the Kano school during the Edo period. The composition features a group of monkeys gathered near a waterfall, with several figures suspended from a branch in a chain formation. The artist employs ink wash techniques to create atmospheric depth, using varying tones to distinguish the foreground foliage from the distant, misty mountains.
The Kano school served as the official painters for the Tokugawa shogunate, and their work often balanced decorative elements with traditional Chinese-influenced brushwork. Here, the monkeys are rendered with soft, rounded forms, contrasting with the sharper, more angular lines of the tree branches and bamboo stalks. The waterfall provides a vertical axis, guiding the viewer's eye through the scene while adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still environment.
Kano Tanshin, a member of the Kajibashi branch of the Kano family, maintained the stylistic rigour of his predecessors while exploring themes common to the period. The use of silk as a medium allows for subtle gradations of ink, which the artist uses to suggest the damp, cool air of a mountain stream. The work reflects the period's interest in natural subjects, treated with a combination of observation and stylistic convention. This print captures the monochromatic beauty of the original, preserving the delicate balance between the negative space of the mist and the detailed figures of the animals.
