Description
Montrose stands beside the South Esk estuary on the Angus coast, where tidal water, broad sands and a prominent town skyline connect the North Sea shore with an important wildlife basin.
The enclosed basin lies immediately inland of the coastal town, receiving the South Esk before the river reaches the sea. Mudflats, saltmarsh and reedbeds support nationally and internationally significant bird populations, including pink footed geese and waders that feed and roost across the tidal ground.
Montrose is seen through leafy green branches across blue water and exposed pale sandbanks. A long bridge spans the channel below the town, whose tall pointed steeple dominates the roofs. One small boat rests near the right bank. Cream clouds, strong foliage and gentle light suggest a summer afternoon, with a dark lamp prominent in the foreground.
