A delicate hanging scroll by Sakai Hōitsu, featuring a gourd vine and moon rendered with the traditional Rinpa tarashikomi technique.
Sakai Hōitsu, a central figure of the Edo-period Rinpa school, demonstrates his mastery of composition and atmospheric subtlety in this hanging scroll. The work depicts a trailing gourd vine suspended against a pale, circular moon. The artist employs the tarashikomi technique, where wet ink or pigment is dropped into still-wet areas to create soft, mottled effects, particularly visible in the rendering of the leaves. This method allows for a naturalistic yet stylised representation of the foliage.
The composition relies on the deliberate use of negative space, a hallmark of the Rinpa aesthetic. By positioning the vine to the right, Hōitsu creates a sense of balance that draws the eye across the empty expanse of the silk. Small insects are depicted with fine, precise brushwork, providing a sense of scale and life to the quiet scene. The muted palette of greens, browns, and soft ochre tones reflects the artist's preference for understated elegance over bold, saturated colour.
Hōitsu was instrumental in reviving the style of Ogata Kōrin, yet he developed a distinct approach that favoured a more lyrical, observational quality. This piece exemplifies his ability to capture a fleeting moment in nature, transforming a simple botanical subject into a contemplative study of light and form. The work is typical of the kachō-ga genre, which focuses on the beauty of birds and flowers, yet it carries the specific poetic sensibility associated with the Rinpa tradition. The artist's signature and seal are present in the lower right, confirming the work's provenance within his later period of production.
