A striking monochromatic relief by Yves Klein, capturing the textured surface of the moon through a singular, intense application of pigment.
Yves Klein is widely recognised for his exploration of pure colour and the immaterial. While he is most associated with his signature International Klein Blue, his practice extended into other monochromatic investigations. Moon II is a work that moves away from the flat surface, engaging instead with the physical topography of the lunar surface. The work is composed of pigment and synthetic resin applied to a plaster base, creating a textured, cratered appearance that mimics the celestial body.
In this piece, Klein shifts his focus from the infinite depth of his blue monochromes to a tactile, sculptural representation of space. The surface is saturated with a singular, intense hue, which serves to unify the physical irregularities of the plaster. By applying a uniform colour across a three-dimensional relief, Klein forces the viewer to confront the interplay between light, shadow, and the material itself. The craters are not merely representational; they are physical indentations that capture light in a way that changes depending on the angle of observation.
This work reflects Klein's interest in the cosmos and the metaphysical. By titling the work Moon II, he invites a direct comparison to the celestial, yet the execution remains firmly rooted in the material reality of the studio. The monochromatic application ensures that the viewer is not distracted by narrative or figurative elements, allowing the focus to remain on the texture and the intensity of the pigment. It is a study in how a single colour can define form and space, transforming a simple plaster panel into an object that suggests the vastness of the lunar landscape without relying on traditional representational techniques. The work remains a clear example of Klein's ability to bridge the gap between the physical object and the conceptual idea of space.
