A textured, monochromatic work by Jean Dubuffet, showcasing his signature 'haute pâte' technique with a focus on raw material and earthy, tactile surfaces.
Jean Dubuffet produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with material and texture. The composition belongs to his broader exploration of the earth and the physical properties of paint. Dubuffet often mixed oil paint with unconventional additives, such as sand, gravel, or tar, to create a thick, crusty surface that he termed 'haute pâte'. This approach allowed him to move away from traditional representational techniques, focusing instead on the tactile quality of the medium.
The surface of the canvas appears weathered and eroded, resembling the surface of a wall or a patch of parched ground. The monochromatic, earthy palette reinforces this connection to the physical world. Within the dense, impasto layers, faint shapes emerge, suggesting organic forms or skeletal structures that align with the title. The artist rejects the polished finish of academic painting, preferring a raw, unrefined aesthetic that prioritises the immediate, physical presence of the material. By building up the surface, Dubuffet creates a sense of geological time, as if the image has been excavated rather than painted.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the primitive and the unrefined, a philosophy he championed throughout his career. By stripping away the conventions of fine art, he sought to capture a more direct, primal experience of reality. The viewer is invited to observe the interplay of light and shadow across the raised ridges and depressions of the paint. It is a study in surface tension and material density, where the act of creation is as visible as the final result. The work remains a primary example of his mid-century output, demonstrating his rejection of traditional beauty in favour of a more visceral, material-based visual language.
