This allegorical set of panels by Walter Crane depicts the times of day as classical female figures. 'Morn, Noon, Eve, Night' showcases the artist's distinctive style, influenced by Japanese prints and Pre-Raphaelite painting.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator, considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation. He was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and the Aesthetic Movement, both of which championed beauty and craftsmanship in response to industrialisation. Crane's work often featured allegorical and mythological subjects, executed in a distinctive style influenced by Japanese prints and Pre-Raphaelite painting. 'Morn, Noon, Eve, Night' is a set of four panels, each depicting a female figure representing a time of day. The figures are rendered in a classical style, with flowing drapery and graceful poses. 'Morn' is depicted as a nude woman with flowing hair, surrounded by birds and flowers. 'Noon' is shown shielding her eyes from the sun, with a peacock nearby. 'Eve' holds a set of scales, symbolising balance, and is accompanied by bats. 'Night' holds red roses, with a dark green cloak and a crow. The colour palette is muted, with a focus on earth tones and soft blues, typical of the Aesthetic Movement.
