Description
A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting cherry blossoms at dawn in the Yoshiwara district of Edo.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital. It depicts the entrance to the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo during the early morning. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the transition from night to day with a blue gradation at the top of the composition. Pink streaks across the horizon suggest the rising sun.
The scene features the Nakanocho, the main boulevard of the district. Cherry trees are in full bloom, their pale blossoms contrasting with the dark wooden structures of the gate and surrounding buildings. Hiroshige employs horizontal bands of white mist to divide the space. This technique provides a sense of distance between the figures in the foreground and the rooftops in the background.
The series Toto Meisho was one of Hiroshige's earliest successes. It helped establish his reputation before the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. Yoshiwara was a walled district, accessible only through the Great Gate shown here. During the cherry blossom season, trees were temporarily planted along the central street to attract visitors. The use of Prussian blue is evident in the sky. This pigment was relatively new to Japan at the time and became a signature element of the artist's work.
In the lower left, a palanquin bearer rests near the entrance gate. Two figures walk towards the interior of the district. The architecture is rendered with precise lines, showing the tiled roofs and wooden slats of the Edo period buildings. The artist uses a limited colour palette of indigo, pale pink, and earth tones. This specific print was published by Kawaguchiya Shozo. It is an example of the meisho-e genre, which focused on famous sites and seasonal beauty.
