A vintage photochrom print of the Morning Glory Pool in Yellowstone, captured by William Henry Jackson in the late nineteenth century.
This image captures the Morning Glory Pool in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer known for his documentation of the American West, utilised this method to add colour to black and white negatives. The process involved creating multiple lithographic stones, each corresponding to a specific hue, to build up the final image. The result is a distinct aesthetic that bridges the gap between photography and traditional printmaking.
The composition focuses on the thermal feature, with its characteristic deep blue centre transitioning into lighter turquoise towards the edges. The mineral deposits surrounding the pool create a rim of orange and ochre, providing a contrast to the water. In the background, a dense line of coniferous trees stands against a clear sky, typical of the high-altitude environment of the park. The foreground shows the barren, sandy terrain surrounding the geyser basin, which remains largely unchanged in its geological character.
Jackson was instrumental in the early visual documentation of Yellowstone. His photographs were used to support the establishment of the park as a protected area. This particular print reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with the American wilderness. The photochrom technique, popularised by the Detroit Photographic Company, allowed for the mass production of these images, bringing the sights of the frontier to a wider audience. The print retains the specific colouration and texture associated with this medium, offering a view of the natural world as it was perceived during the late Victorian era. The clarity of the water and the surrounding forest detail provide a record of the site before modern tourism altered the immediate vicinity of the pool.
