Description
Mortlich rises north of Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, a wooded hill above the Dee Valley where walking routes climb towards an old summit memorial and broad views across the surrounding countryside.
The hill stands north of Aboyne and the River Dee, reaching 381 metres. A route from the village climbs through Scots pine to the summit, where a large cairn contains remains of a memorial to the tenth Marquis of Huntly, which collapsed in 1912.
Mortlich appears as a gently rounded wooded rise above open green slopes. Pale trunked trees are spaced across the hillside below a dense dark conifer crown. Yellow flowering shrubs cross the foreground beside muted brown heath, while a small pale house stands to the right. Clear daylight and bright blossom suggest late spring or the beginning of summer.
