A sixteenth-century woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicting Moses addressing the Israelites, rendered with precise linear detail.
This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts the biblical figure of Moses addressing the Israelites. The composition centres on the prophet, who stands in a commanding posture, gesturing towards the gathered crowd. His appearance includes the traditional iconographic feature of horns, a common visual convention in medieval and Renaissance art derived from a mistranslation of the Hebrew text in the Vulgate Bible. The surrounding figures are rendered in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, reflecting the practice of placing historical narratives within the visual context of the artist's own era.
Specklin employs a clear, linear style characteristic of German woodcut production during the mid-sixteenth century. The figures are arranged in a semi-circle, creating a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium. The hatching and cross-hatching techniques define the folds of the garments and the contours of the landscape, providing texture and form without the need for tonal shading. The background remains relatively sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the central figure and the audience.
As a practitioner of the graphic arts in Strasbourg, Specklin contributed to the dissemination of religious and moral narratives through printed media. This work demonstrates the technical precision required for woodblock carving, where every line must be carefully removed from the block to leave the image in relief. The print captures a moment of instruction, with the crowd appearing attentive and engaged. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation period, where such illustrations were frequently used to accompany religious texts and provide accessible interpretations of scripture for a wider audience.
