Benjamin West's 'Moses Shown the Promised Land' depicts a scene from the Old Testament. Moses, near the end of his life, is shown a vision of the land his people will inherit. The composition is arranged with Moses reclining in the lower centre, surrounded by ethereal figures and bathed in divine light. Angels guide his gaze towards the heavens, where a glimpse of the Promised Land is revealed. The colour palette is dominated by muted tones, with highlights of white and pale blues to emphasise the heavenly presence. West, an American-born artist who spent much of his career in England, was known for his history paintings and his role as a mentor to other American artists. He served as President of the Royal Academy. His work often combined classical and religious themes, reflecting the artistic tastes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
