A delicate seventeenth-century Mughal drawing of a mother and child, presented within a traditional gold-flecked border.
This delicate drawing originates from the Mughal period, a time when the imperial workshops of India produced works of exceptional technical precision. The composition focuses on a seated woman interacting with a small child, rendered with fine, controlled lines that define the contours of their forms and the folds of their garments. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the figures and the subtle modelling of their features.
The work is presented within a traditional border, a hallmark of Mughal manuscript presentation. The surrounding mount features a deep green ground flecked with gold leaf, which provides a contrast to the muted tones of the central drawing. This style of mounting was common for individual folios intended for inclusion in a royal album or muraqqa. The inclusion of a halo around the woman suggests a status of reverence or divinity, often seen in depictions of figures from religious or courtly narratives.
Technically, the drawing demonstrates the characteristic Mughal interest in naturalism combined with a decorative approach to page layout. The figures are placed against a minimal background, which directs the viewer to the gestures and expressions of the subjects. The use of ink wash provides a sense of volume, while the calligraphic quality of the line work reflects the training of court artists in both calligraphy and painting. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the seventeenth-century Mughal court, where the synthesis of Persian influence and indigenous Indian traditions created a distinct visual language. The preservation of the original border and the gold-flecked paper adds to the historical character of the folio, maintaining the presentation style favoured by collectors of the era.
