A 1907 oil painting by Maximilien Luce depicting a tranquil Dutch canal scene with windmills and figures, rendered in his signature Neo-Impressionist style.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, painted this work during his travels to the Netherlands in 1907. The composition captures a serene Dutch waterway, dominated by the presence of traditional windmills that define the horizon. Luce employs his characteristic approach to colour, using short, rhythmic brushstrokes to construct the light reflecting off the water and the shifting clouds above.
The scene depicts a quiet moment along the canal, where a small boat with a sail rests near the bank. In the foreground, two figures stand on the path, providing a sense of scale against the industrial and agricultural backdrop. While Luce is often associated with the divisionist technique, this work shows a more fluid application of paint, allowing for a softer atmospheric quality. The palette consists of cool blues and greys in the sky, contrasted by the earthy tones of the windmills and the bright green of the grassy bank.
Luce frequently visited the Netherlands, drawn to the specific quality of light and the structural clarity of the Dutch landscape. This painting reflects his interest in the intersection of rural tradition and the encroaching industrialisation of the early twentieth century. The smoke visible in the distance suggests the presence of factories, a common theme in his later work as he moved away from pure pointillism toward a more personal, expressive style. The work remains a clear example of his ability to balance observational detail with a subjective interpretation of the environment.
