A serene 1935 Shin-hanga woodblock print by Hasui Kawase, depicting Mount Fuji at night from the Kawai Bridge.
Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1935. The composition captures a serene nocturnal view of Mount Fuji, viewed from the vicinity of the Kawai Bridge. The artist employs a cool, nocturnal palette dominated by shades of blue, which creates a sense of stillness and quietude. The snow-capped peak of the mountain emerges from a soft haze, providing a contrast to the darker, more defined structures of the bridge and the surrounding pine trees in the foreground.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Shin-hanga tradition, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western elements of light and perspective. The reflection of the bridge and the mountain in the water below adds a layer of depth to the scene. The inclusion of a lone figure on the bridge introduces a human element, suggesting the scale of the environment. The vertical orientation of the print emphasises the height of the pine trees and the towering presence of the mountain, while the horizontal lines of the bridge provide a stable base for the composition.
Kawase was known for his extensive travels throughout Japan, and his work often documented specific locations with a focus on atmospheric conditions. This print is an example of his ability to translate the transient qualities of light and weather into the medium of woodblock printing. The subtle gradations of colour in the sky and water are achieved through the skilled application of multiple woodblocks, a process that requires careful registration and control. The result is a balanced image that captures a specific moment of calm, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of nature and human architecture.
