A traditional Japanese hanging scroll depicting the mythical Mount Penglai, featuring symbolic imagery of cranes, a tortoise, and a rising sun.
This hanging scroll by Kano Tansui Moritsune depicts the mythical Mount Penglai, a legendary island of immortality in East Asian tradition. The composition features a craggy, pine-covered island floating amidst stylised waves, with a large tortoise visible beneath the water surface. The tortoise, often associated with longevity, acts as a base for the island, reinforcing the theme of eternal life. Above, a red sun hangs in the sky, accompanied by a crane in flight, another symbol of long life and auspiciousness.
The work draws upon the Kano school tradition, which combined Chinese ink wash techniques with Japanese decorative sensibilities. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the subtle greens of the pines and the soft red of the sun to emerge from the silk background. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the pine needles and the rhythmic, repetitive patterns of the water. The inclusion of the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang, a classic theme in East Asian art, provides a poetic framework for the scene, linking the mythical island to established literary and artistic tropes.
Kano Tansui Moritsune was a member of the Kano family, the dominant school of painting in Japan during the Edo period. His work reflects the technical rigour expected of the school, while demonstrating a clear focus on symbolic imagery. The vertical orientation of the scroll is typical of the format, designed for display in a tokonoma, or alcove, where it would serve as a meditative object. The balance between the solid forms of the island and the fluid, atmospheric treatment of the surrounding space creates a sense of calm. This piece offers a clear example of how Edo-period artists synthesised mythological narratives with traditional painting techniques to create works of enduring visual interest.
