A scene from The Tales of Ise by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, featuring a traveller on Mount Utsu rendered in ink and colour on gold leaf.
This work depicts a scene from the ninth chapter of The Tales of Ise, a classic collection of Japanese poetry and prose. Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a founder of the Rinpa school, captures the traveller Narihira as he navigates the narrow, overgrown paths of Mount Utsu. The composition balances the figures of the nobleman and his attendants against the stylised, rolling terrain.
Sōtatsu employs a refined aesthetic, using gold leaf to create a luminous background that contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the hills. The figures are rendered with precise, delicate brushwork, typical of the period's narrative scrolls. The inclusion of calligraphy, integrated directly into the pictorial space, serves to unify the visual and literary elements of the composition. The artist avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the atmospheric quality of the journey through the mountain pass.
This piece reflects the Rinpa school's interest in classical literature and decorative design. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft greens and browns to suggest the natural environment. The arrangement of the figures creates a sense of movement, guiding the eye across the page as the traveller encounters the difficult terrain. The work is a fine example of the collaborative nature of Japanese art, where text and image function as a single, cohesive unit. It provides a window into the cultural preoccupations of the early Edo period, where the appreciation of historical poetry was central to artistic practice. The print captures the original texture and subtle colour variations of the paper, ensuring the integrity of the historical aesthetic is maintained.
