Mountain Graveyard, painted in 1919, captures a period of transition in the career of Kurt Schwitters. While he is often associated with the Dada movement and his later Merz constructions, this work demonstrates his early engagement with Expressionist modes of representation. The composition relies on a series of angular, intersecting forms that suggest the rugged terrain of a mountain setting. Crosses emerge from the darkness, providing a sombre thematic anchor to the scene.
The palette is dominated by high-contrast tones, with deep blues and blacks clashing against luminous yellows and oranges. This use of colour creates a sense of internal light, as if the scene is illuminated from behind the mountain peaks. The brushwork is gestural and direct, reflecting the urgency often found in German Expressionist works of the post-First World War era. Schwitters employs these heavy, dark lines to define the silhouettes of the crosses, which appear almost skeletal against the atmospheric background.
Unlike his later collages, which utilised found objects and discarded materials, this painting focuses on the emotive potential of paint on canvas. The spatial arrangement is compressed, pushing the subject matter to the front of the picture plane.
