A rare etching by Hercules Segers, showcasing his experimental approach to printmaking and his fascination with rugged, mountainous terrain.
Hercules Segers remains an outlier within the Dutch Golden Age. His approach to printmaking involved experimental techniques, often using coloured grounds or unconventional inks to achieve atmospheric effects. This etching, Mountain Landscape with a Plateau, demonstrates his preoccupation with geological formations and the vastness of the natural world. Unlike his contemporaries who focused on the domestic or the pastoral, Segers looked toward craggy, inhospitable terrain.
The composition relies on a series of etched lines that define the jagged edges of the rock face. By using a monochromatic green ink, Segers creates a sense of distance and light that feels almost otherworldly. The plateau sits in the middle ground, providing a small, cultivated contrast to the imposing cliffs that dominate the frame. His technique of using drypoint alongside etching allows for softer, velvety textures in the shadows, which adds depth to the rock surfaces.
Segers was an inventor of his own process, often reworking plates multiple times. This specific print reflects his interest in the physical properties of the medium. The lines are precise yet fluid, capturing the rugged texture of the stone without relying on heavy shading. The sky is kept relatively sparse, which draws the eye toward the geological structure of the mountains. This work provides a glimpse into the experimental nature of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the artist acted as both technician and visionary. The print is a study of form and texture, stripped of human narrative, focusing entirely on the raw, elemental character of the terrain. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that rewards close observation of the etched marks and the subtle variations in the ink application.
