This drawing depicts the Roman legend of Gaius Mucius Scaevola, who famously thrust his right hand into a fire to demonstrate his resolve before the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna. Benedetto Caliari, the younger brother of the celebrated Paolo Veronese, employs a sophisticated technique here, utilising pen and brown ink with grey wash on blue paper. The addition of white heightening provides a sense of volume to the figures and the flickering flames of the altar.

The composition is organised with a focus on the central action, where Mucius stands firm while his hand is consumed by the fire. The surrounding figures, dressed in classical armour, observe the event with varying degrees of tension and surprise. Caliari includes an ornate architectural element in the upper right, featuring a sculptural figure that adds a decorative quality to the scene. This work reflects the Venetian tradition of drawing, where the emphasis lies on the interplay of light and shadow to define form rather than rigid outlines.

Benedetto Caliari was an active participant in his brother's workshop, contributing to numerous large-scale decorative projects in Venice.
