A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen, depicting lampreys on a riverbank with a coastal scene in the background.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts a group of lampreys resting upon a riverbank, rendered with the precise observation characteristic of seventeenth-century natural history studies. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris, produced several series of prints documenting fish and aquatic life. His work often combines scientific curiosity with the conventions of the Dutch and Flemish marine tradition.
The composition places the lampreys in the immediate foreground, their elongated, serpentine forms coiled around the base of a tree. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the creatures, including the distinct gill openings along their sides. Behind this primary subject, the scene opens to a coastal view featuring small vessels, fishing nets, and modest dwellings. This juxtaposition of biological study and maritime activity provides a sense of place, suggesting the environment where such specimens might be encountered by local fishermen.
The print includes the Latin title 'Muræna sive Lampetra' and the French 'La Lamproye' at the base, alongside the artist's signature 'A. Flamen fe' and the phrase 'cum priuil. Regis', indicating the work was produced under royal privilege. The etching demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation through hatching and cross-hatching, which creates depth and volume without the need for colour. The background remains relatively sparse, ensuring the viewer's attention stays fixed on the anatomical details of the lampreys. This piece offers a glimpse into the period's fascination with the classification of the natural world, presented through the technical rigour of the etching medium. It is a representative example of how artists of the era documented the fauna of the Low Countries and beyond, balancing aesthetic composition with the descriptive requirements of the time.
