Description

A pair of Rococo scenes by François Boucher depicting groups of putti engaged in music and play near classical fountains.

François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, produced these works as part of a series depicting the activities of putti. The compositions feature groups of cherubic figures engaged in leisure, music, and play within an idyllic, garden-like setting. The presence of stone fountains, shells, and soft, atmospheric foliage provides a backdrop for the lighthearted narrative. Boucher employs a palette of soft pastels, including pale blues, creams, and muted greens, which characterises his mature style. The figures are rendered with a characteristic softness, their forms rounded and their expressions gentle. The artist focuses on the play of light across the skin of the putti and the cascading water of the fountains, creating a sense of movement and grace. These works were often intended for decorative schemes in private interiors, reflecting the taste for pastoral and mythological themes that dominated the mid-eighteenth century in France. The arrangement of the figures is carefully balanced, with the putti interacting in small, intimate clusters. One panel shows figures playing instruments and dancing, while the other depicts a more quiet, conspiratorial gathering. The inclusion of classical motifs, such as the dolphin-shaped fountain, aligns with the period's interest in antiquity, albeit interpreted through a decorative and whimsical lens. Boucher's technique here demonstrates his ability to manage complex groupings while maintaining a sense of airiness and ease. The brushwork is fluid, allowing for the soft transitions between the figures and their surroundings. These paintings offer a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the French aristocracy during the reign of Louis XV, where art functioned as a source of pleasure and visual harmony within the domestic sphere.
