This work belongs to the final period of Pablo Picasso's career, during which he returned frequently to the figure of the musketeer. These characters, inspired by the Golden Age of Spanish literature and the paintings of Rembrandt or Velázquez, allowed the artist to explore historical archetypes through his own distinct visual language. The figure is rendered with bold, gestural brushwork and a simplified, almost childlike geometry that characterises his late output. The composition is dominated by a heavy, black outline that defines the subject's form against a neutral background. The musketeer wears a wide-brimmed hat and a ruff, elements that evoke the seventeenth century, yet the execution remains firmly rooted in the twentieth-century modernist tradition. Picasso employs a palette of primary colours, including red, yellow, and green, applied in thick, confident strokes. The subject's hands are positioned centrally, adding a sense of stillness to the otherwise energetic application of paint. In these late portraits, Picasso moved away from the complex fragmentation of his earlier Cubist experiments. Instead, he favoured a direct, raw approach to the canvas. The dates inscribed on the work, 4.11.70 and 24.11.70, indicate that the painting was completed over a period of weeks. This practice of dating his works was common for the artist in his final years, reflecting his focus on the immediate process of creation.
