An allegorical engraving depicting a musical scene, capturing a woman playing the virginal accompanied by two figures in a domestic setting.
This engraving, titled Muziek (Musica), is a work associated with the Dutch polymath Cornelis Jacobsz. Drebbel. It depicts an allegorical scene representing the sense of hearing or the art of music. A central female figure plays a virginal, her expression focused and serene. Beside her, an older man wearing spectacles holds a candle to illuminate the musical score, while a younger figure looks on with rapt attention. The composition employs the characteristic cross-hatching techniques of the period to define form and texture, particularly in the rendering of the lace collars and the fabric of the garments.
The scene is set within a domestic interior, though the background remains somewhat ambiguous, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and their instruments. The inclusion of musical tools in the background reinforces the thematic focus on auditory art. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Jucundo tristes oblecto carmine mentes, Depelloque graves curas, relevoque labores', translates to the idea that music delights sad minds, dispels heavy cares, and relieves labours. This moralising tone is typical of the era, where art often served to instruct as much as to delight.
Drebbel, better known for his scientific inventions and engineering, produced a limited number of prints that reflect the intellectual climate of the early seventeenth-century Netherlands. The precision of the line work demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency, consistent with the standards of Dutch printmaking during this time. The figures are rendered with a degree of stylisation common to Northern Mannerism, seen in the elongated proportions and the specific treatment of the facial features. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural values of the Dutch Golden Age, where music was viewed as a restorative force for the human spirit.
