A complex High Renaissance composition by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting the mystic marriage of two saints alongside the Virgin and Child.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this composition around 1524. The work depicts a complex theological scene, the mystic marriage, involving the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and two saints named Catherine. Lotto departs from the serene, balanced compositions typical of his contemporaries, opting instead for a crowded, psychologically charged arrangement of figures.
At the centre, the Virgin Mary holds the infant Christ, who reaches towards Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The latter is identifiable by her traditional attributes, while Saint Catherine of Siena kneels to the right. The presence of Saint Jerome, reading a book in the lower left, and other figures in the shadows, creates a dense, multi-layered narrative. The lighting is dramatic, with deep shadows that obscure parts of the background, directing the viewer's attention to the central interaction between the child and the saints.
Lotto was known for his idiosyncratic style, which often included expressive gestures and a certain restlessness in his subjects. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, ochres, and dark, atmospheric tones. The figures are rendered with a focus on their individual emotional states rather than mere idealised beauty. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage a large group of figures within a confined space, maintaining a sense of movement and tension. The inclusion of the lion, a symbol of Saint Jerome, adds a further layer of iconographic detail to the scene. This print captures the specific textures of the original oil painting, from the sheen of the armour to the heavy folds of the drapery, providing a clear view of Lotto's technique and his approach to religious subject matter.
