A detailed 16th-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the act of clothing the naked, a traditional work of mercy.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts the act of clothing the naked, one of the Seven Acts of Mercy. The composition centres on a bearded figure, draped in heavy, voluminous robes, who assists a man in donning a garment. To the left, a woman stands partially obscured, her posture suggesting humility or distress, while another figure waits in the background. The scene is set within a structured architectural space, defined by clean lines and a sense of depth typical of the period.
Coornhert, a Dutch engraver, humanist, and theologian, was known for his technical precision. His work often engaged with moral and philosophical themes, reflecting the intellectual climate of the sixteenth-century Netherlands. The figures exhibit a muscularity and anatomical focus that draws upon the influence of Italian Mannerism, particularly the works of Maarten van Heemskerck, with whom Coornhert frequently collaborated. The hatching techniques employed throughout the print create a distinct sense of volume and texture, particularly in the drapery of the central figure and the musculature of the man being clothed.
The inscription at the base, 'Naect Was ick, ghy hebt my ghecleedt', translates to 'I was naked, and you clothed me', directly referencing the biblical passage from the Gospel of Matthew. This print functions as both a visual narrative and a moral instruction, encouraging the viewer to reflect on the virtue of charity. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with Coornhert's output. As a piece of Northern Renaissance art, it provides insight into the intersection of religious devotion and the development of printmaking as a medium for disseminating ethical concepts to a wider audience.
