A 1527 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the allegorical figure of Charity, featuring precise line work and traditional Christian symbolism.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1527, depicts the allegorical figure of Charity (Naastenliefde). As a member of the Little Masters, a group of German printmakers who produced small-scale, highly detailed works, Aldegrever demonstrates his technical precision through the controlled use of the burin. The central figure stands in a contrapposto pose, draped in heavy, voluminous fabric that reveals the artist's interest in the human form and classical drapery styles common in the sixteenth century.
To the left, a tall obelisk features small figures at its base, while a coat of arms sits above. The figure of Charity holds a standard adorned with a pelican, a traditional symbol of self-sacrifice and maternal care in Christian iconography. The composition balances these symbolic elements with a sense of spatial depth, despite the modest dimensions of the original plate. The background includes architectural fragments and a distant horizon, which provide a sense of scale to the primary subject.
Aldegrever was based in Soest and was influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer, which is evident in the clarity of the line work and the structured approach to the composition. The print reflects the intellectual climate of the Reformation era in Germany, where classical motifs were frequently integrated with moralising allegories. The artist's monogram, AG, is visible in the upper right corner, a hallmark of his professional output during this period. This print offers a clear example of the technical standards achieved by German printmakers in the early sixteenth century, focusing on balance, symbolic narrative, and the mastery of engraving techniques on copper plates.
