A detailed eighteenth-century Rococo etching by Jakob Wangner, depicting the allegorical figure of Night surrounded by ornate, swirling motifs and classical symbols.
This etching, titled 'Nacht' or 'Nox', is a characteristic example of mid-eighteenth-century German printmaking. Jakob Wangner, an engraver active in Augsburg, produced this work as part of a series exploring allegorical themes. The composition displays the ornate, asymmetrical qualities typical of the Rococo period, featuring elaborate shell-like forms, scrolling foliage, and fluid, wave-like motifs that define the structure supporting the sleeping figure.
The central figure, representing the personification of Night, rests upon this decorative pedestal. Above, a crescent moon hangs in the sky, while an owl, a traditional symbol of nocturnal wisdom and shadow, perches nearby. The scene incorporates a mix of classical allegory and decorative art, common in the print culture of the era. The lower section includes text in both German and Latin, providing a moralising or descriptive context for the image, which was a standard practice for such allegorical series intended for a learned audience.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of Wangner's burin work. The contrast between the deep, shadowed areas and the lighter, etched highlights creates a sense of volume within the complex, swirling forms. The foliage on the right side provides a grounding element to the otherwise fantastical, dreamlike architecture of the pedestal. This print reflects the period's fascination with the interplay between nature and artifice, where organic shapes are transformed into highly stylised, ornamental structures. The work is a fine specimen of the Augsburg school of engraving, which was highly regarded for its ability to translate complex allegorical concepts into visually dense, highly detailed compositions suitable for collectors of the time.
