Description
A moonlit landscape from Hiroshige's Kisokaidō series. It depicts travellers crossing a bridge over the Wada River at Nagakubo. The composition features a full moon and silhouetted pine trees alongside local figures with a packhorse.
Nagakubo is the twenty-eighth station in the series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō. This series was a collaborative project between Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen. It documents the inland mountain route between Edo and Kyoto. This specific print is one of the most recognised compositions in the set.
The scene depicts a moonlit evening at the Wada River. A large full moon sits in the upper left. Hiroshige used the bokashi technique to create the soft colour gradations in the sky and water. This method involves hand-applying ink to the woodblock to achieve a fading effect. The dark blue of the river contrasts with the pale grey of the distant mountains. The use of negative space around the moon suggests a hazy night atmosphere.
In the foreground, a man leads a packhorse towards a small building on the right. Two children play with a white dog nearby. One child appears to be riding the animal. A large pine tree occupies the centre of the composition. Its dark needles are silhouetted against the moonlit sky. On the long wooden bridge in the middle ground, several figures appear as dark shapes. One traveller leads a horse while others carry loads on poles. These silhouettes create a sense of movement across the horizontal axis of the print.
Hiroshige focused on the atmosphere of the journey. He captured the quiet mood of a rural station at night. The print shows the daily activities of travellers and locals during the Edo period. The balance between the natural elements and the human figures is a characteristic of his landscape style. This work demonstrates his skill in using a restrained colour palette to suggest light and shadow. The composition relies on strong diagonals and the vertical lines of the bridge pilings to create structure.
