A detailed ukiyo-e triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a dramatic samurai siege and historical battle scene.
This triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicts a historical conflict between the Nagao brothers, Kagetora and Harukage. The scene captures the chaos of a siege, with samurai engaged in combat across the courtyard of a fortified structure. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, demonstrates his mastery of the musha-e genre, which focuses on warrior prints and historical narratives from Japanese lore.
The composition is divided across three sheets, creating a wide panoramic view of the battle. On the left, soldiers scale the walls and breach the gates, while the centre and right panels show mounted warriors and foot soldiers clashing with spears and swords. The architecture is rendered with a sense of depth, providing a structured backdrop to the frenetic activity of the soldiers. The artist employs a palette of muted blues, earthy browns, and soft reds, which balances the intensity of the subject matter.
Textual cartouches are integrated into the upper sections of the print, providing historical context for the event. These elements were common in mid-nineteenth-century woodblock prints, serving to educate the viewer on the specific military campaign being portrayed. The attention to detail in the armour and weaponry reflects the period interest in historical accuracy and the glorification of the samurai class. This print is a characteristic example of the narrative style prevalent in the late Edo period, where artists sought to bring legendary battles to life for a popular audience. The work remains a clear representation of the technical skill involved in multi-panel woodblock printing, requiring precise registration to align the complex scene across the three separate sheets.
