Jacques-Louis David painted this work in 1801, commissioned by the King of Spain, Charles IV. It depicts Napoleon Bonaparte leading his troops across the Great St Bernard Pass in May 1800. The composition presents a heroic, idealised vision of the leader, who sits atop a rearing charger. His right arm points towards the summit, while his gaze meets the viewer with calm authority. The billowing cloak and the horse's flowing mane create a sense of forward momentum, contrasting with the rugged, static mountain terrain.

David employs the visual language of Neoclassicism to construct a political narrative. The painting is not a literal record of the event, as Napoleon actually crossed the pass on a mule, wearing a simple greatcoat. Instead, David focuses on the iconography of power. He includes the names of historical figures carved into the rocks at the bottom left: Bonaparte, Hannibal, and Karolus Magnus (Charlemagne). By placing Napoleon alongside these conquerors, David aligns his subject with the great military leaders of the past.

The palette is dominated by cool tones in the sky and mountain peaks, which contrast with the warm ochre of the cloak and the golden accents of the uniform. The lighting is theatrical, casting a spotlight on the central figure to ensure he remains the primary focus. The horse, rendered with muscular detail, serves as a vehicle for the energy of the scene. This work remains a primary example of how art was used to shape public perception during the Napoleonic era, prioritising symbolic truth over documentary accuracy.
