A traditional Chinese ink and colour study of narcissus, fungus, and nandina by the Qing Dynasty master Wu Xizai.
Wu Xizai, a prominent calligrapher and seal carver of the Qing Dynasty, brings his disciplined brushwork to this botanical study. The composition features a grouping of narcissus, fungus, and nandina, plants often associated with auspicious symbolism in Chinese art. The narcissus, with its slender, blade-like leaves and delicate blossoms, occupies the lower portion of the frame, while the nandina berries provide a splash of muted red in the upper section.
The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the ink work, particularly in the rendering of the leaves and the rock formations at the base. The lines vary in weight and pressure, reflecting the artist's mastery of the brush. The ink washes are applied with restraint, allowing the natural tone of the paper to serve as a neutral background. The composition is balanced, with the vertical orientation typical of traditional hanging scrolls.
Wu Xizai was known for his adherence to the seal script style of calligraphy, and this influence is visible in the structural integrity of the plant forms. Rather than seeking a photographic representation, the work focuses on the essential character of the subjects. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions and red seals adds a layer of historical context, identifying the artist and the nature of the piece. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink and colour, preserving the quiet observation of the natural world that defines this period of Chinese painting.
