This fan painting by Wang Guxiang (1501-1568) demonstrates the refined aesthetic of the Ming Dynasty literati tradition. Wang, a native of Suzhou, was known for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre, a category of painting that prioritised the symbolic and formal qualities of nature over mere representation. The composition is formatted for a folding fan, a popular medium for scholarly exchange and personal expression during the period.
The work features a cluster of narcissus plants emerging from behind a weathered garden rock. To the right, a flowering branch extends across the fan, creating a balance between the verticality of the narcissus leaves and the horizontal reach of the blossoms. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle ink washes and muted tones to define the forms. The paper surface, aged to a warm, golden hue, provides a neutral ground that allows the delicate brushwork to remain clear.
Calligraphy occupies the upper right section of the fan, integrated into the overall design. The text provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual imagery, a common practice in Chinese painting that unites the arts of poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
