A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a textile shop in Narumi, a station on the Tokaido road, showcasing traditional shibori dyeing crafts.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Narumi, a location historically associated with the production of shibori-dyed textiles. The composition captures a domestic scene within a shop, where figures are engaged in the preparation and sale of these goods. Hokusai employs a clear, structured perspective to define the interior space, using architectural lines to guide the eye across the tatami mats and towards the figures.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the specific cultural identity of the Tokaido route. A woman sits near a display of fabric, while a man works on the floor, surrounded by the tools of his trade. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft pinks, greens, and earthy tones to define the garments and the shop environment. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the surrounding signage, reflects the technical precision of the Edo-period printmaking process.
Unlike the later, more famous landscape series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often focuses on the social and commercial life of the towns. This work provides a glimpse into the daily operations of a textile merchant, documenting the craft traditions that defined the region. The inclusion of text within the image serves to identify the location and the series, integrating graphic design with the pictorial elements. The print remains a record of the commercial activity that sustained the travellers and residents along the road between Edo and Kyoto.
