Description
Mounted on a black horse, Yoichi enters the rough shallows while the Taira boat and its red-sun folding fan wait far across Yashima Bay.
A military challenge interrupts the fighting at Yashima. From one vessel, the Taira raise an open fan bearing a crimson sun and invite their enemies to strike it. Chosen for the attempt, Nasu no Yoichi must ride beyond the beach before he can even lift his bow, negotiating wind, tide and an unsteady mount.
This contemporary interpretation places the viewpoint almost among the breakers. Turquoise water presses against the dark animal, the rider leans towards open sea, and the distant boat remains deliberately small. The result makes the hazardous approach its own event while fixing the geography needed for every later scene in the series.
