A still life by Jean-Baptiste Oudry featuring dead birds and cherries, rendered with precise detail and a muted colour palette. This work exemplifies Oudry's skill in capturing the textures and forms of the natural world.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic still lifes featuring animals and hunting scenes. Oudry served as a professor at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, and later as director of the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry factories. His work bridged the gap between the earlier Dutch still life tradition and the more decorative French style. This still life depicts two dead birds, one hanging by a string and the other lying on a stone ledge. A sprig of cherries and currants sits beside the lower bird. A butterfly and several insects are scattered around the composition. The painting is characterised by its precise detail and realistic rendering of textures, from the birds' feathers to the sheen of the cherries. The muted colour palette and soft lighting contribute to the work's contemplative mood. Oudry's skill in capturing the delicate details of nature is evident in this composition.
