An 1824 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a pair of oxen with a cart in the Neapolitan countryside, with Mount Vesuvius in the distance.
Johann Adam Klein, a German printmaker and painter, produced this etching during his travels through Italy. The work captures a quiet moment in the Neapolitan countryside, featuring a pair of oxen resting beside a wooden cart. One animal lies on the ground, while the other stands, tethered to the yoke. In the background, the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius rises, with a plume of smoke visible against the sky. This composition reflects the artist's interest in the daily life and rural customs of the regions he visited.
Klein was known for his precise draughtsmanship and his ability to render animals with anatomical accuracy. His technique relies on fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the oxen's hides and the weathered wood of the cart. The etching demonstrates a clear focus on observation, typical of the Biedermeier period, which favoured realistic depictions of everyday subjects. The inclusion of the volcanic peak provides a specific geographical context, grounding the scene in the Italian landscape. The print is signed and dated in the lower right corner, confirming its creation in 1824. This piece offers a glimpse into the travel culture of the early nineteenth century, where artists documented their journeys through sketches and prints. The composition is balanced, with the resting oxen providing a stable base for the narrative, while the distant mountain adds depth to the scene. The work remains a clear example of Klein's technical skill in the medium of etching, showing his attention to detail in both the animal subjects and the surrounding environment.
