Description

A serene Impressionist study of the Seine by Alfred Sisley, capturing the atmospheric light and textured vegetation of the French countryside in 1880.

Alfred Sisley, a central figure of the Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1880 during his period of residence in the village of By, located near Moret-sur-Loing. The composition captures a quiet stretch of the Seine, framed by the dense, textured foliage of a foreground tree. Sisley employs a characteristic technique of broken brushstrokes to render the interplay of light across the tall grasses and the water surface.

The palette relies on earthy ochres and browns for the foreground, which contrast with the deep blue of the river and the cooler, atmospheric tones of the sky. Sisley was known for his dedication to the observation of meteorological conditions, and here he records the shifting clouds with a sense of immediacy. The tree on the right acts as a framing device, drawing the viewer's eye toward the distant bank where the river curves out of sight. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on urban subjects, Sisley maintained a consistent interest in the rural outskirts of Paris, documenting the quiet beauty of the French countryside.

This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance structural composition with the fleeting effects of natural light. The application of paint is varied, ranging from thin washes in the sky to thicker, impasto marks that define the texture of the leaves and the dry vegetation. By focusing on the specific light quality of a single moment, Sisley provides a direct record of his environment. The work remains a representative example of his mature style, where the observation of nature is prioritised over formal artifice. It offers a calm, observational perspective on the riverbanks that defined much of his later career.

Artist Biography

Alfred Sisley

Sisley applied for French citizenship in 1898 and was refused. He applied again. Illness intervened. He died a British citizen in France, having never held French nationality, despite living there for almost his entire adult life.

He was born in Paris in 1839 to English parents. His father William ran a luxury goods import-export business. At eighteen, Sisley was sent to London to study commerce. He came back wanting to paint. He studied alongside Monet, Renoir, and Bazille at Gleyre's studio in the early 1860s.

He was the most landscape-committed of the Impressionists: he painted almost nothing else. No portraits, no cafe scenes, no modern life. His father's business collapsed during the Franco-Prussian War. Sisley had been financially comfortable until then; after 1870, he lived in poverty for the rest of his life. In 1876 he painted a series of six canvases of the catastrophic Seine flooding at Port-Marly: moody skies, planks laid as walkways, skiffs serving as ferries. They are among his finest works.

He died of throat cancer in 1899 at Moret-sur-Loing, aged fifty-nine. His partner Eugenie Lescouezec had died a few months earlier. Prices for his paintings increased almost immediately after his death.
