Alphonse Allais, a French writer and humorist associated with the Incoherents movement, produced this work in 1882. The piece consists of a solid black rectangle framed by decorative, ornate corner flourishes typical of late nineteenth-century print media. Below the image, the French title, 'Combat de nègres dans une cave, pendant la nuit', is printed, followed by the parenthetical note, 'Reproduction du célèbre tableau'.

This work functions as an early example of conceptual art and monochrome painting. By presenting a completely black surface, Allais subverts the traditional expectation of representational art. The humour lies in the disparity between the literal visual content, which is an absence of colour, and the descriptive title, which invites the viewer to imagine a chaotic scene of conflict in darkness. It is a satirical commentary on the art world of the period, mocking the pretension of contemporary exhibitions and the reliance on titles to dictate the meaning of abstract or minimalist works.

Allais was a central figure in the Incoherents, a group known for their irreverent and absurdist approach to culture. This monochrome print predates similar experiments in twentieth-century modernism, such as those by Kazimir Malevich or Ad Reinhardt, by several decades. While those later artists sought to explore the spiritual or formal properties of the void, Allais utilised the monochrome as a tool for wit and irony.
