Armand Guillaumin, a French Impressionist painter, is known for his vibrant use of colour and his depictions of the French countryside. Although he was part of the circle of Impressionist painters that included Monet and Pissarro, his work often displays a unique intensity of colour, sometimes verging on Fauvism. He found particular inspiration in the landscapes of the Île-de-France region. 'Neige' (Snow) presents a winter scene, likely painted en plein air. Two houses dominate the composition, one rendered in pale yellow and the other in a warm red hue. Snow covers the ground, with visible brushstrokes suggesting texture and depth. The sky is overcast, painted with soft blues and greys, which contrast with the warmer tones of the buildings. Bare trees punctuate the horizon line, adding to the starkness of the winter setting.
