A detailed photographic print of a traditional Japanese netsuke, featuring an animal resting beneath a ribbed, conical shell.
This fine art print captures a traditional Japanese netsuke, a miniature sculpture designed for a practical purpose. During the Edo period, the kimono lacked pockets, so personal items such as tobacco pouches or medicine containers were suspended from the obi sash by a cord. The netsuke served as a toggle to secure these containers in place.
This specific piece depicts an animal curled in a state of rest, tucked beneath a conical, ribbed shell or leaf-like structure. The carver has utilised the natural grain and patina of the ivory to suggest the texture of the animal's fur and the rigid, linear quality of the covering. The contrast between the smooth, rounded form of the creature and the sharp, vertical striations of the shell demonstrates the technical skill required to work in such a small scale.
Netsuke carvers often drew inspiration from the natural world, folklore, and daily life. These objects were not merely functional; they were status symbols and expressions of personal taste. The choice of subject matter often reflected the owner's interests or beliefs. The patina on this piece suggests age and handling, which is common for authentic examples of this craft. By isolating the object against a neutral background, this print allows for a clear examination of the form, the balance of the composition, and the subtle variations in the material. It provides a view into the aesthetic values of historical Japan, where utility and artistic expression were combined in everyday objects.
