Description
A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian featuring the letter V, adorned with allegorical figures, an hourglass, and a clock.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian, a prominent German printmaker of the early seventeenth century, forms part of his celebrated series of ornamental letters. The work presents the letter V, constructed through a fusion of architectural and figurative elements. Kilian, based in Augsburg, was well-regarded for his technical precision and his contribution to the dissemination of Northern Mannerist and early Baroque decorative motifs. The composition is anchored by the letterform itself, which serves as a frame for a complex allegorical scene. A central putto holds a ribbon inscribed with Roman numerals, positioned beneath an hourglass. This imagery relates to the passage of time, a common theme in period iconography. Below, a clock face is integrated into the base of the letter, further reinforcing the temporal subject matter. The surrounding space is filled with scrolling acanthus leaves and winged figures, characteristic of the auricular style that Kilian helped to popularise. Kilian's line work demonstrates the controlled, rhythmic quality typical of high-quality copperplate engraving. The varying density of the hatching creates a sense of volume in the figures and depth within the ornamental scrolls. This print reflects the period's fascination with combining functional typography with elaborate, imaginative decoration. Such works were often used as models for other craftsmen, including goldsmiths and woodcarvers, who drew inspiration from these printed designs for their own decorative projects. The clarity of the engraving allows for a detailed examination of the interplay between the rigid letterform and the fluid, organic ornamentation that defines the Baroque aesthetic.
