Description
An elegant Art Nouveau illustration by Raphael Kirchner, originally published in the New York Tribune. It features a woman in profile with a large hat and lilies.
Raphael Kirchner was an Austrian artist who gained fame for his stylish depictions of women during the Belle Époque. This illustration appeared in the New York Tribune during the final years of his life. Kirchner moved to the United States in 1914 to escape the conflict in Europe, where he continued his work for magazines and newspapers. His style is a precursor to the mid-century pin-up, characterised by a blend of Art Nouveau aesthetics and a modern sensibility.
The composition features a woman in profile, her face partially obscured by the brim of a large, dark hat. She wears a dark lace shawl that contrasts with the pale tones of her skin. The inclusion of white lilies adds a traditional symbolic element to the image, though the execution remains firmly within the realm of commercial fashion illustration. Kirchner uses soft shading and precise line work to define the figure, creating a sense of volume within the oval frame.
This print captures the transition between the decorative excesses of the late nineteenth century and the more streamlined graphic styles of the early twentieth century. The use of a monochromatic or limited palette is typical of newspaper supplements from this period. Kirchner's ability to convey texture, from the delicate petals of the flowers to the heavy weave of the lace, demonstrates his technical skill as a draughtsman.
