Description
Newhaven on the Sussex shoreline offers a spacious meeting of timber decking, turquoise waves and distant chalk, with a little lighthouse balancing the view across the bay.
At the mouth of the River Ouse, Newhaven is a port in the Lewes district of East Sussex. Its fort was built on Castle Hill following the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission, providing defences above the entrance to the growing harbour.
A long timber pier reaches from the left into blue-green water, while a small lighthouse marks the breakwater on the right. Beyond the entrance, a pale chalk headland closes the distant bay. Grassy slopes and grey boulders fill the lower edge. Light cloud stretches across a generous sky, and the quiet surface gives this sunny coastal view a spacious summer calm.
